Grade Point Average (GPA)
The following chart provides the numerical equivalent to letter grades and how the weighted grade compares to a standard weighting. Honors and AP classes all use the honors calculations while all other classes utilize the standard calculation. The weighted GPA is based on a 4.0 scale with weights assigned to classes based on the difficulty of the class.

Academic Achievement Recognition
MTHS uses the Latin Honor System to recognize students for outstanding academic achievement. Academic recognition will be based on the student’s weighted GPA after the completion of 8 semesters of course work.
Students will be recognized based on the following scale:
Summa Cum Laude: 4.500 and above
Magna Cum Laude: 4.300 - 4.499
Cum Laude: 4.000 - 4.299

Course Not to Be Calculated in GPA
A student may designate one elective class as PASS/FAIL or NOT CALCULATED in GPA per semester. A student may designate one double-period elective class as PASS/FAIL or NO GPA per year. The following stipulations apply.
Students must have completed the graduation requirements for courses or be concurrently enrolled in a required class before a class can be taken Pass/ Fail or No GPA
3 Credits (6 semesters) Math
3 Credits (6 Semesters) Science
3 Credits (6 Semesters) Social Studies
2 Credits (4 Semesters) Foreign Language
1 Credit (2 Semesters) Fine Arts
The course taken to meet the consumer education requirement (Consumer Economics or AP Macro Economics) may not be taken Pass/Fail or No GPA.
Students are required to complete all papers/projects/tests/quizzes for the course.
If a student takes a class Pass/Fail and earns a D- or better, a “P”(PASS) goes on the transcript. The student will earn credit for the course. However, the course grade will not be calculated in the student’s cumulative GPA. If a student takes a class Pass/Fail and earns an F, a “NC”(no credit) goes on the transcript. The student will not earn credit for the course. The course grade will not be calculated in the student’s cumulative GPA.
If a student takes a class NO GPA, the student’s grade will appear on the transcript. However, the grade will not be calculated in the student’s cumulative GPA. An asterisk* will appear by the grade, noting that it was not used in the cumulative GPA calculation.
AP Classes CAN be taken as PASS/FAIL or NO GPA. Dual Credit classes CAN be taken as PASS/FAIL or NO GPA for MTHS, but the original letter grade will be sent to ICC and will appear on the ICC transcript. For all courses designated NO GPA, an asterisk will appear by the grade on the transcript, noting that it was not used in cumulative GPA calculation.
A student wishing to take a course PASS/FAIL or NO GPA must sign and return the formal agreement by the deadline. The grade will not be changed to Pass/Fail until after the end of the grading period. This procedure must be repeated each semester.
